The Hysterical Injury (24/2/2012)

16/01/2012

Annie and Tom Gardiner grew up as brother and sister in Llandeilo, South Wales and are now the Bristol/Bath-based duo Hysterical Injury. The band was instigated by Annie (bass/vocaks, songwriter) in 2007; while Tom (drums) contributed percussion on the early demos, the recordings on the 12 track debut album ‘Dead Wolf Situation’ constitute the first time the siblings have been heard together as a duo, outside of their many blistering live performances. The interim has seen the band play over 200 gigs and release two EPs – their marriage of crystal-sweet vocal melodies with boiling cauldrons of rock noise some have likened to a “noise-rock Carpenters”,

If you like: Sonic Youth, Mazzy Star, Death From Above 1979, Jimmy Chamberlain, Throwing Muses, The Joy Formidable

Hysterical Injury have a clear vibrancy and energy that helps to set them apart from their piers. Annie’s soft and delicate vocals are set against some vicarious drums from Tom, while the album features some really gnarly bass guitar that’s clearly turned right up. Hysterical Injury are full of ideas and have a real passion and commitment to express those ideas through their live shows and debut album – 2012 is theirs!
